About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Sacramento’s vibrant Northgate neighborhood, Pupusas Central is a soulful Salvadoran restaurant that serves up a true taste of El Salvador. From the moment you step inside this cozy, family-owned spot, you’re greeted by an inviting ambiance that feels like a warm embrace—simple, authentic, and unpretentiously comforting, just like the food it proudly serves.

At Pupusas Central, the star of the menu is undoubtedly the Pupusas, the traditional Salvadoran stuffed corn tortillas, crafted with care and bursting with flavor. Whether you’re drawn to the savory indulgence of the Birria Pupusa, the tender richness of the Carnitas Pupusa, or the classic combination of pork, cheese, and beans, each bite offers a perfect balance of textures and spices that both newcomers and Salvadoran natives alike will delight in. The Plato De Pupusas (Pupusas Plate) is an excellent way to sample a variety, paired beautifully with tangy cabbage salad that cuts through the richness with refreshing zest.

If seafood is your preference, the Mojarra Frita (Whole Fried Tilapia Fish) is a standout, crisped to golden perfection and bursting with fresh, oceanic flavors—an absolute must-try, especially popular among regulars. For a hearty and flavorful experience, the Plato Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo (Shrimp in Garlic Sauce) and the fiery Plato Camarones A La Diabla offer bold, layered tastes that elevate shrimp to new heights. The magnificent Plato Cielo, Mar, Y Tierra, combining chicken, steak, and shrimp, is a carnivore’s dream.

Salvadoran comfort food shines in the soups too. The Sopa De Res (Beef Soup) and Sopa De Gallina (Fresh Hen Soup) are soul-warming, rich with slow-simmered goodness that conjures memories of homestyle cooking. And when it’s time to indulge your sweet tooth, you’ll find authentic delights like Budin Con Chocolate Caliente, creamy Flan, and the uniquely sweet Empanadas De Plátano—stuffed plantains filled with custard that deliver a perfect blend of richness and sweetness.

Complimenting this authentic spread are traditional Salvadoran beverages such as the tantalizing ensalada drink praised by customers, featuring the intriguing fruit that produces cashews, and the rich, comforting horchata salvadoreña, reminiscent of champurrado, that warms you from the inside out.

Guests frequently highlight the exceptional value at Pupusas Central—not only in taste but also in portion size and pricing. Whether you dine in surrounded by the energy of soccer games on big-screen TVs or enjoy a meticulously packaged to-go order, the experience never disappoints. Patrons rave about the freshness, the flavor depth, and the friendly customer service that makes everyone feel like family.

One returning customer confidently shares, “I’ve tried every variety and there isn’t a bad one on the menu,” while another enthuses about the salvadorian ensalada as the perfect accompaniment to the pupusas, adding a unique fruity twist that elevates the meal.

Pupusas Central is more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural haven and a culinary treasure that transports you to the heart of El Salvador through every bite. For those seeking authentic flavors served with warmth and care in Sacramento, this gem is an absolute must-visit.

Truly salvadorian! In my experience, the "ensalada" drink is what adds the icing on the cake when having pupusas. Its main ingredient is the fruit that produces the cashew, but a totally different flavor. If you have not tried it, give it a go.

Fantastic birria pupusas. The fried fish plate (Mojarra) is the go to order for my wife. Highly recommend! Also a big screen TV with soccer games on every time I have visited.

I discovered this gem on door dash and frequent it at least once a week since then. I’ve tried every variety and there isn’t a bad one on the menu. Everything is fresh, packaged well and the price is fantastic. The sleeper hit is the side of beans you get with the rice. My favorite is the pork, cheese and beans and the cheese with jalapeño. Give them a shot, you won’t be left hungry or disappointed.

I had the food to-go and plated it myself: chicken enchiladas, beef/chicken/jalapeno pupusas, and cabbage salad. It was first time trying the Salvadoran food. Tasty to the last bite. Don't forget to lick the plate!

Pupusa Central is amazing! My favorite pupusa is the pupusa con birria - it's absolutely delicious. The prices are super affordable, but the food is top-notch. The ambience reminds me of home: simple, cozy, and family-owned, which makes it even more special. The horchata salvadoreña is incredible too - it tastes just like champurrado, rich and comforting. The customer service is always so kind and welcoming; you can tell the people here are hardworking and genuinely care about their customers. I love this place and definitely recommend it to anyone craving authentic, flavorful food at a great price.

Best Salvadorean food in the north Sacramento area! Authentic food, the music, the service everything combined is amazing, got the opportunity to unlock memories and moments I experienced growing up in my homeland; El Salvador .

Placed a large order of pupusas to go with orders of plátanos con crema y frijoles, and it was ready within the time they said (20min). All piping hot and packaged very nice and well. The pupusas were delicious along with the curtido and salsas. The fried plantains with cream and soft cheese (queso fresco) and beans spot on. Definitely will order or dine-in again from Pupusas Central.

I tried the bean and cheese pupusa and the spinach and cheese, both were delicious! Highly recommend. The Maracuyá juice was too sweet to drink, blech!
